What to expect at a Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo service

How long: 2–3 hours.
Standing & sitting: Mostly standing. In Ethiopian and Eritrean churches, shoes are removed.
Communion: Members of the church who have fasted and prepared receive Communion.
If you belong to another church: Other Christians, Catholics included, are welcome to pray with the community but do not receive Communion. Ask about the blessed bread after the service.
What to wear: Modest dress. White shawls are traditional in Ethiopian and Eritrean churches.
Good to know: Visitors are warmly welcomed, and often invited to share a meal afterwards.
